| Harsens Island Fire Department
The HIFD has been busy this past year! We now have city water with real fire hydrants on most of the island. The equipment has been purchased to utilize the new hydrants, which use five inch supply hose and fittings, and we are looking forward to begin training with this new equipment. This will mean faster access to water at fires when time is important - to save lives and property.
We are currently in the process of looking for a new pumper. Our 1975 Ford pumper is 27 years old, and outdated due to current standards. The new pumper, along with the new hydrants, will help us try to get a lower ISO fire rating, saving all of us on our fire insurance premiums.
We have paid off the fire hall building this year, thus saving the taxpayers of Harsens Island a substantial amount of interest if we had allowed the building loan to run to term. To accomplish this, the funds will come out of this year's budget. We are currently applying for and receiving funds from various state, federal, and local sources to help offset the cost of much needed training and equipment.
We are always looking for people who would like to be part of our department; please contact us if you are interested. (810)748-3044. |
